Courts Handling Detroit Civil Cases

Two courts process Detroit civil court records. The 36th District Court sits at 421 Madison Street in downtown Detroit. It is the busiest district court in Michigan, with 29 judges on the bench. This court has jurisdiction over general civil cases up to $25,000, small claims up to $7,000, and other civil disputes that fall under MCL 600.8301. The court handles thousands of civil filings each year, making it one of the highest-volume courts in the Midwest.

For civil cases above $25,000, you go to the 3rd Circuit Court. This is the Wayne County Circuit Court, and it serves all of Wayne County, not just Detroit. The circuit court clerk's office is at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, 2 Woodward Avenue. Circuit court records include lawsuits, contract disputes, and other matters where the amount in question exceeds the district court limit. Under MCR 8.119, all court records are presumed open to the public unless sealed by a judge.

What Detroit Civil Records Include

Detroit civil court records contain the full history of a case from start to finish. A typical civil case file includes the complaint or petition that started the case, the summons, any responses filed by the other side, motions, court orders, and the final judgment. The register of actions (sometimes called the docket) serves as a permanent log of everything that happened in the case. It lists every document filed, every hearing held, and every order issued.

Some cases also include discovery materials like depositions or interrogatories, though these may not always be in the court file. Settlement agreements are included when the case resolves without a trial. Under MCR 1.109, certain personal information like full dates of birth and Social Security numbers are protected and will be redacted from public records. Cases that have been sealed or expunged will not appear in any search results.
