MiCOURT does not show full document images for most courts. You get docket entries and basic case information. If you need the actual filings, motions, or judgments, you will need to request them from the clerk. That said, MiCOURT is still the best starting point for finding case numbers and seeing what has been filed in a Houghton County civil case.

The Houghton County Clerk's page provides contact info and some guidance on records requests. It does not have its own case search tool, so MiCOURT is the primary online option. Michigan courts can publish records on websites under MCR 8.119, and Houghton County relies on the state system for that purpose.

Houghton County Records and Privacy

Court records in Michigan are public by default. MCL 600.1420 makes that clear. But there are limits. MCR 1.109 requires that certain personal details be kept out of public view. Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and bank account numbers must be redacted. If a document contains this type of information, the court will strip it before releasing the record.

Sealed cases are completely off-limits. A judge has to issue a specific order to seal a case, and there are rules about when that can happen. For standard civil lawsuits in Houghton County, the records are open. Keep in mind that court records are exempt from Michigan's Freedom of Information Act. MCL 15.232(h)(iv) carves out the judiciary, so you cannot use a FOIA request to get court documents. Go through the clerk instead.

Note: The 23rd Circuit Court serves multiple Upper Peninsula counties, so some case records may be filed in neighboring jurisdictions.

Being in the Upper Peninsula, Houghton County is relatively remote compared to southern Michigan counties. But the statewide online tools make it possible to search civil court records and file documents without making a long drive to the courthouse. MiCOURT and MiFILE bridge that gap.
