The 20th Circuit Court handles civil cases where the claim is more than $25,000, as set out in MCL 600.8301. This includes contract disputes, personal injury suits, and other civil matters that go past the district court limit. The 58th District Court takes civil cases up to $25,000 and also handles small claims up to $6,500. Both courts serve Ottawa County from Grand Haven, though the district court also has a branch in Hudsonville to serve the eastern part of the county.

Note: The Ottawa County Clerk's office does not accept record requests by fax, so plan to visit in person, mail your request, or use the online tools.

How to Search Ottawa County Court Records

Searching for civil court records in Ottawa County can be done online or at the courthouse. The fastest way is to use the MiCOURT Case Search portal, which is free and open to everyone. Under MCR 8.119, court records in Michigan are presumed to be public. That means anyone can look them up. The public right of access is also backed by MCL 600.1420, which says all courts of record must be public.

Civil Court Record Request Process

Ottawa County Court Fees

Copy fees in Ottawa County follow the statewide schedule set by MCL 600.2546. Standard copies cost $1.00 to $2.00 per page. Certified copies cost $10.00 for the certification plus $1.00 per page after that. If you need an exemplified copy, the fee is about the same as a certified one.

Filing fees for new civil cases depend on how much money is at stake. A case where the claim is under $600 costs $30 to $35 to file. Claims between $601 and $1,750 run $50 to $55. For higher amounts, the fees go up from there. Small claims filing in the 58th District Court is less expensive, usually around $30 for claims under $600. The court accepts cash, checks, and money orders. Some courts also take credit cards for certain transactions, so call ahead if you plan to pay with a card.
