Searching Calhoun County Civil Records Online

Calhoun County uses the Tyler Odyssey system for online records access. The Calhoun County Clerk Resources page provides links to search tools and case lookup options. This is a good starting point for finding civil court records in the county.

The MiCOURT Case Search portal also covers Calhoun County courts as part of the statewide system. You can search by party name, case number, business name, or attorney. The results show docket entries, case status, and hearing schedules. There is no cost to use either system.

Having two search tools available is actually a plus. The Tyler Odyssey system may have more detailed local information, while MiCOURT provides a consistent statewide format. Neither tool typically shows full document images. For copies of the actual filings, contact the clerk's office at either the Marshall or Battle Creek location.

Requesting Calhoun County Court Documents

In-person requests can be made at either the Marshall or Battle Creek location. Go to the clerk's window and provide the case number or party names. Staff will look up the case and make copies of the documents you need. Bring payment for the copy fees. Because the county has two offices, check which location holds the records you need before you make the trip.

Mail requests should go to the Calhoun County Clerk. For the Marshall office, use 315 W. Green St., Marshall, MI 49068. For Battle Creek, use 161 E. Michigan Ave., Battle Creek, MI 49014. Include the case number, party names, and a list of documents you want. Send a check for estimated fees and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Processing time varies, so plan ahead.

Court Record Fees in Calhoun County

Standard copies cost $1.00 to $2.00 per page. MCL 600.2546 sets these rates across Michigan. Certified copies add a $10.00 to $11.00 certification fee on top of the per-page charge. Get certified copies when you need documents for official purposes or to present in another court.

Civil filing fees scale with the claim amount. Small claims in the 10th District Court have the lowest filing costs. Standard district court cases for claims under $600 run about $30 to $35 to file. Cases with higher claim amounts cost more. Circuit court filings for claims above $25,000 carry the highest fees. The Calhoun County website may have fee information, or call either office location for exact amounts.

Public Access to Calhoun Court Records

MCL 600.1420 requires Michigan courts to be public. Calhoun County courts follow this rule. Anyone can ask to review a civil case file at either courthouse location. You do not have to explain your reason. The right to view public records is guaranteed by MCR 8.119.

Some records have restricted access. Juvenile cases, adoptions, and mental health proceedings are not public. Cases sealed by court order require special permission. Since April 2022, protected personal information is redacted from all public court files under MCR 1.109. This covers Social Security numbers, birth dates, driver's license numbers, and bank account information. These protections apply across all Michigan courts.

FOIA does not apply to court records in Michigan. MCL 15.232(h)(iv) specifically exempts the judiciary. All records requests must go through the clerk's office. There is no alternative process for accessing court files.

Note: The Tyler Odyssey system provides online access to some case information, but sealed records will not appear in search results.
