Searching Barry County Civil Records Online

Barry County provides access to court records through a couple of online channels. The Barry County Courts page is a good starting point for finding links, contacts, and general court information.

The MiCOURT Case Search portal is the main statewide tool for looking up civil court records. You can search by name, case number, business, or attorney. The system covers both the circuit court and the 56B District Court. It shows docket entries, case status, hearing dates, and a summary of actions taken in each case. The tool is free and available at all hours.

Document images are generally not available online through MiCOURT. What you see is a summary of the case file. If you need actual copies of complaints, motions, orders, or judgments, contact the clerk's office. The court may eventually expand online access, but for now, MCR 8.119 leaves the decision to each court about how much to put on public websites.

Note: The Barry County Courts website at barrycounty.org/courts may have additional local search tools beyond MiCOURT.

How to Request Barry County Court Records

In-person requests are the fastest way to get civil court records in Barry County. For circuit court records, go to the courthouse at 220 W. State Street. For district court records, visit 206 W. Court Street, Suite 202. Both locations are in Hastings and close to each other. Provide the case number or party names and tell staff which documents you need. They will pull the file and make copies on the spot.

Mail requests should be sent to the appropriate court office. Include the case number, party names, and a list of the specific documents you want. Add a check for the estimated copy fees. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope for return mail. The staff will process your request and send the copies back. Allow a few business days to a couple of weeks depending on how busy the office is.

For filing new documents with the court, the MiFILE electronic filing system is available. Attorneys in many Michigan courts must use e-filing. Self-represented parties can use it voluntarily. MiFILE works around the clock and provides email updates on case activity.

Barry County Court Fees

Standard copy fees run $1.00 to $2.00 per page. MCL 600.2546 governs these rates. Certified copies cost about $10.00 to $11.00 for the certification plus the per-page charge. Use certified copies when you need documents for official purposes or for use in another court proceeding.

Filing fees for civil cases depend on the amount at stake. Small claims in the 56B District Court have the lowest filing fees. Standard civil filings for claims under $600 start at about $30 to $35. Cases with higher claim amounts cost progressively more to file. Circuit court filings for claims above $25,000 have the highest fees. Call the circuit court at (269) 945-1286 or the district court at (269) 945-1404 for the current schedule.

Public Access to Barry Court Records

MCL 600.1420 requires that Michigan courts be open to the public. Barry County courts follow this rule. You can ask to see any civil case file without providing a reason for your request. The clerk's staff must allow access to public records under MCR 8.119.

There are limits. Juvenile cases, adoption records, mental health proceedings, and sealed cases are not available to the public. Protected personal identifying information is redacted from public files as required by MCR 1.109. This includes birth dates, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and bank account numbers. These protections took full effect in April 2022 and apply to all Michigan courts, including Barry County.

Court records are not available through FOIA. MCL 15.232(h)(iv) exempts Michigan courts from FOIA requests. If someone tells you to file a FOIA request for court records, that advice is incorrect. Go directly to the clerk's office for all court record requests.

Note: Personal protection order files may have restricted address information even when the case itself is partially public.
