Eaton County Civil Court Fees

Eaton County charges $2.00 per page for regular copies of court records. This is on the higher end compared to some other Michigan counties. Certified copies are $10.00 for the first page and $1.00 for each additional page. These fees are set by the county in line with state guidelines under MCL 600.2546.

Filing fees for new civil actions depend on the amount at stake. Small claims cases in the 56A District Court cost the least to file. Standard civil filings in District Court range from about $50.00 to $130.00 based on the claim amount. Circuit Court filings for disputes above $25,000 can run $150.00 to $215.00 or more. If you cannot afford the filing fees, you can ask for a fee waiver. The court reviews these requests based on your financial circumstances and decides whether to reduce or eliminate the fees.

Note: Eaton County's $2.00 per page rate for standard copies is higher than the $1.00 rate in many other Michigan counties, so plan accordingly for large requests.

Civil court records in Eaton County are public under MCR 8.119. The court rule creates a presumption of openness. Anyone can visit the clerk's office and ask to view a case file. The clerk must provide access unless the record is sealed, involves a juvenile, or falls under another legal restriction. Most civil case files are completely open for public review.

Privacy protections limit what personal information appears in public records. MCR 1.109 requires the redaction of Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver's license numbers, and financial account numbers from court documents available to the public. This rule has been in place since April 2022. It is also worth noting that court records are exempt from Michigan's FOIA under MCL 15.232(h)(iv). You cannot use a FOIA request to get court documents.
